TWENTYMAN: Training camp Day 2 observations

Ramped up energy: There was an obvious uptick in the energy, pace and trash talking between the offense and defense from Day 1 to Day 2 of training camp on Thursday. This is a team that knows they have a lot of talent and the way they are going to maximize it is through daily competition and pushing each other. The offense and defense certainly ramped up the energy and competition level in team periods and they got some great work in Thursday. It's good to see this early in camp.

Best on best: It's so fun watching tackle Penei Sewell work against edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson on a daily basis. Both players are so much better for the work they get against one another. Hutchinson was definitely a man on a mission on Thursday. He was dominant in the last team period, recording a sack from both sides of the line and opening up another sack for blitzing cornerback Terrion Arnold by taking the tight end and the tackle with him on an inside move. Hutchinson is poised for a monster third season. I thought the defensive line as a whole had a really nice day.

In attendance: Professional wrestler Hulk Hogan took in practice Thursday as he's in town promoting his new beer. Also in attendance for practice Thursday was World Champion boxer and Flint native Claressa Shields, who fights Saturday at Little Caesars Arena for the WBC Women's Heavyweight World Championship. Head coach Dan Campbell made it a point to stop over and say hello to both practice guests.

Different feel: There's definitely a different feel watching wide receiver Jameson Williams as he begins his third training camp. The best way to describe it is he looks really comfortable. He made a big touchdown catch on a bomb Wednesday, but Thursday during the first team period he made a couple terrific catches for quarterback Jared Goff over the middle of the field. Williams has looked really good to start camp.

Opportunity knocks: Defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike is entering the fourth and final season of his rookie contract in Detroit after being a second-round pick in 2021. A back injury plagued him his first two seasons and he's entering his fourth season in the best shape of his Detroit tenure. Thursday he took first-team reps opposite Hutchinson on the edge. Onwuzurike had a good spring and if he can pick up where he left off in the offseason program that's another versatile weapon Aaron Glenn can use upfront along his defensive line.

WR competition: I mentioned wide receivers Daurice Fountain and Jalon Calhoun having nice practices on Wednesday. The competition for the final couple roster spots at receiver could be highly contested over the next month. Another name to keep an eye on is Kaden Davis. He had a great spring and I thought he really had a nice practice Thursday with a sliding catch along the sideline and a couple other nice plays down the field. Fountain was good again Thursday too, highlighted by a deep ball from Goff for a touchdown in a 7-on-7 period getting behind Arnold.

Big leg: It was the Jake Bates show in practice Thursday as he took all the kicks in team periods. I had him at a perfect 6-for-6 ranging from 24 to 53 yards. The power in that right leg is no joke. His 53 yarder nicked the right post and still landed a good 10 yards past the cross bar. Consistency will be big for him trying to beat out Michael Badgley for the kicker job.

QB reps: Nate Sudfeld took second-team reps at quarterback Thursday after Hendon Hooker took them on Wednesday. It appears the Lions are going to rotate those reps and give both players a fair shot to win the backup job. I thought Sudfeld and Hooker were sharp Thursday, both making some tight-window throws along the sideline and over the middle.
