TWENTYMAN: Training camp Day 14 observations

Goff to St. Brown: Jared Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown is a connection Lions fans have gotten used to over the last three years. St. Brown's 315 receptions are the third most in the history of the game in a player's first three seasons. The two were nearly unstoppable on Wednesday. Goff was making terrific tight-window throws in team periods all morning and St. Brown caught two touchdowns and had a number of other huge catches. St. Brown has looked even better this year in camp, if that's possible.

Proving coach right: Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn spoke to the media for the first time in camp before practice on Wednesday and one of the players he talked about was second-year linebacker Jack Campbell and how much better he's looked in coverage. Low and behold about an hour and a half later Campbell made a terrific interception off Goff in a team period, returning it for a touchdown.

Practice report: The injuries are starting to pile up for the Lions as there were a number of players working off to the side of practice with trainers during Wednesday's last open practice to fans at training camp. Guard Kevin Zeitler, tight end Sam LaPorta, cornerback Carlton Davis III, linebacker James Houston, cornerback Terrion Arnold and defensive back Brian Branch were in that group. Cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr., running back Jahmyr Gibbs and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez weren't spotted at practice.

Hooker back: After missing the last two practices recovering from a concussion suffered in last week's preseason game vs. the Giants, quarterback Hendon Hooker was back at practice Wednesday and said afterward he expects to play in Saturday's second preseason game in Kansas City.

Depth at CB: With Arnold, Davis and Rakestraw all missing practice due to injury, Detroit's depth at cornerback is starting to be tested. Kindle Vildor and Khalil Dorsey were the starting cornerbacks on the outside with the first-team defense and Amik Robertson was at the nickel. Vildor has played in 51 games (24 starts) and Dorsey 19 (2). That's good experience for the No. 4 and No. 5 cornerbacks currently on the roster. The injuries Davis (hamstring), Arnold (shoulder) and Rakestraw (ankle) are dealing with don't appear to be long-term.

Catch of the day: Wide receiver Jameson Williams made a terrific diving catch in the corner of the end zone for a two-point conversion that won a team period for the offense. It came right in front of the fans and they let Williams know they appreciated the effort.

Someone new every day: It seems every practice there's a new wide receiver who steps up in the search for the No. 4 and No. 5 WR spots. Wednesday, it was Kaden Davis. Davis spent last year on the Cardinals' practice squad. He's had a really nice camp, putting himself in the conversation for inclusion on the roster. He had a couple big catches in team periods, including a touchdown reception from Hooker. The next two weeks are going to be huge for that group of receivers all vying for a roster spot.

Situational football: I really liked the situational drill head coach Dan Campbell put the team in to end practice. The offense got the ball at their own 30-yard line down 23-14 with two minutes and 42 seconds on the clock. If they scored on the first possession, they'd simulate recovering an onside kick and give them the chance to win.

Goff methodically moved the offense down the field on a 12-play drive connecting with tight end Brock Wright, wide receiver Kalif Raymond, Williams, running back David Montgomery and St. Brown, the latter a nice touchdown over the outstretched hands of safety Kerby Joseph.

After simulating the recovered onside kick, the offense got the ball back at the 45-yard line with 45 seconds left. Goff hit St. Brown for a 21-yard gain and then running back Craig Reynolds in the flat for 25 yards to the 9-yard line. A couple kneel-downs and a spike later put Jake Bates in position to hit a 31-yard field goal for an offense win.

A couple defensive highlights in the series were sacks by Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill the offense had to overcome.
