Best competition: Backup quarterback job

Hooker took all the second-team reps in the spring in OTAs and minicamp as the Lions give the former third-round pick every opportunity to win the backup job after the veteran Bridgewater retired following the 2023 season.

Last year was essentially a redshirt season for Hooker as he was rehabbing a torn ACL suffered while at the University of Tennessee at the end of the 2022 season. Detroit activated Hooker off the NFI (non-football injury) list the last month and a half of the season so he could get some practice reps and be the emergency third quarterback. That time was beneficial for him to learn under Goff and Bridgewater and get his feet wet at little bit.

This was a big spring for Hooker to get a ton of reps, run the huddle and work on timing. There are a lot of things that are new for him from footwork, pass concepts and just commanding a huddle and making play calls. He had an up-and-down spring working through some of those things. He can really spin it and he made some nice throws, but he was also indecisive at times and turned the ball over too much.

Sudfeld is an experienced veteran and was Goff's backup in 2022. He missed all of last season after tearing his ACL in the preseason. He'll give Hooker more of a competition for the backup job than some may think.

Twentyman's take: Goff has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL over the last two seasons and was rewarded with a massive four-year extension this offseason that makes him one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

Goff ranked second in the league last year in passing yards (4, 575), fourth in touchdowns (30) and ninth in passer rating (97.9). He's a perfect fit for offensive coordinator Ben Johnson's scheme, a scheme they developed together to fit Goff's skillset when Johnson took over the OC job in 2022.

The Lions protect Goff with one of the best offensive lines in football, they support him with a top rushing attack, and he has multiple skill-position weapons that make plays around him. Simply stated, Goff masterfully orchestrates one of the most complete offenses in the NFL.

By the numbers:

9: Detroit was tied with the 49ers for second in the NFL with nine 30-point performances last season. Only Dallas had more with 10.

35.7: Goff's rate of 37.5 percent of his pass attempts resulting in first downs was the sixth highest rate in the NFL in 2023.

69: Passes of 20-plus yards for Goff last season, second only to San Francisco's Brock Purdy (72) for the NFL lead.

430: Rushing yards for Hooker with five rushing touchdowns in 11 games his senior season at Tennessee.

6,712: Total net yards for the Lions' offense last season to set a new franchise record. Their 58 touchdowns scored was also tops in team history.

Quotable: "Now I'm more driven and fired up to go even harder and put the pedal to the metal even more to bring a Super Bowl to this city," Goff said following his extension.

"This city just means so much to me now and will hold a special place in my heart forever that there isn't as much external motivator as there is internal of, I just want to win for them. I want to win for these fans, and I want them to be able to experience the success that we've had this past year and half and continue to do that."
