Week 8 opponent: What the Titans are saying

What are the Tennessee Titans talking about ahead of Sunday's matchup in Detroit against the Lions? Let's find out:

1. Who will play quarterback for Tennessee this week? Starter Will Levis is dealing with a shoulder injury that kept him out of last week's loss to Buffalo. Titans head coach Brian Callahan isn't sure of Levis' status for Sunday yet but he does plan to return to Levis at quarterback when healthy.

"The minute he is back healthy, the intent is for him to continue to play," Callahan told tennesseetitans.com. "Hopefully that is sooner rather than later, because I'd like to continue to have him playing football. But I'm not going to let him go out there if he's not where he needs to be to go perform. Maybe this week, maybe next week, but sooner or later he'll be back playing."

Mason Rudolph started in place of Levis against the Bills and would start against the Lions Sunday if Levis can't go.

2. Staying on the topic of quarterbacks, Callahan said Lions quarterback Jared Goff is playing the position as well as anyone in the league right now.

"Just in terms of efficiency and finding completions," he said of Goff. "It feels like every game I look up he's got like four incompletions. They've done a great job of finding their playmakers. He deals the ball. Jared, I think, is an underrated quarterback. He is probably playing the position as good as anybody in football right now and a large reason why they are 5-1."

Tennessee will try to limit Goff and the Lions' passing game with the No. 1 total defense in football and the No. 3 passing defense through six games.

3. "Yeah, I mean it's a tremendous challenge," linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. said about going on the road to Detroit and facing the Lions' No. 2 ranked offense. "They've played some really good football this season. So, it's going to be critical for us to hone in on our game plan, really lock in onto what we see on tape, and just go out there and play a detailed, complete football game."

4. The Titans rank 31st in total offense, 25th in scoring, last in passing offense and 21st in rushing. Callahan said they are not doing a good enough job countering what defenses are throwing at them and in a copycat league that can lead to trouble. He also said penalties and negative plays on early downs are limiting that unit.

"I think there's always room for more," he said. "I think we are in a position right now where we need more from everybody, top to bottom."

5. Consider Callahan a huge fan of Detroit's running back duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. He said they are a great complement to each other, and he was particularly impressed with how hard both run but also how disciplined they both are as runners. Callahan said Gibbs was one of his favorite players coming out of the 2023 NFL Draft.

"He's just a dynamic, dynamic football player," Callahan said of Gibbs.

6. When looking at Detroit's defense, Callahan said one thing that stands out is how well safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph play together and how they are always around the football.

"They anticipate like quarterbacks anticipate," he said of Branch and Joseph. "They find zones, they find the soft spot and they break on the football knowing where the ball is going to be delivered. It's a rare combination to have guys like that that both play at such a highly intelligent level."

Branch and Joseph lead Detroit with four interceptions apiece as the Lions are tied for eighth in the NFL with 11 takeaways on the year.
