NFC NORTH: Where all four teams stand heading into Week 8

There is a new frontrunner in the NFC North after Detroit's 31-29 win in Minnesota Sunday gives them the current tie breaker with the Vikings in the division with both teams owning 5-1 records. With Green Bay's win over Houston Sunday, the NFC North just keeps chugging along as the best division in football through the first seven weeks of the season.

The quarterback play in the NFC North has been particularly good to start the season and might just have all four teams in the thick of the NFC playoff hunt right into January. Let's take a look at the quarterback play and where things stand in the division heading into Week 8:

DETROIT

Record: 5-1

Last week: Detroit 31, Minnesota 29

Up next: vs. Tennessee (1-5)

Quarterback: Jared Goff – 128 for 174 (73.6 percent), 1,610 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT, 111.5 rating

Fun fact: The Lions have more touchdowns (18) than Goff has thrown incompletions (16) over Detroit's last four contests. That's a wild statistic. Detroit is the only team that's ever done that since the NFL/AFL merger.

Twentyman: Goff leads the NFL in passer rating and is second in completion percentage. He is playing arguably the best football of his career and is in complete control of Ben Johnson's offense.

It's no coincidence that Goff's torrid play also coincides with the Lions winning four straight games and producing 30-or-more points in three straight contests. There's still a lot of football to play, but Goff should be in the early MVP conversation.

MINNESOTA

Record: 5-1

Last week: Detroit 31, Minnesota 29

Up next: at Los Angeles Rams (2-4)

Quarterback: Sam Darnold – 109 for 164 (66.5), 1,370 yards, 12 TD, 5 INT, 104.0 rating

Fun fact: Blitz Darnold at your own peril if you're an opposing defense. Darnold leads the NFL with a 148.7 rating when blitzed. He's completing nearly 70 percent of those passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Twentyman: Darnold has been a good fit in Kevin O'Connell's offense. He's got a strong and accurate arm and a good pocket demeanor. He distributes the football on time to the plethora of receiving targets the Vikings employ. He's one of just nine quarterbacks across the NFL that has a passer rating north of 100.0 this far into the season.

The arm talent was always there with Darnold, he just needed the right system and the weapons around him. He finally has that in Minnesota in O'Connell's offense.

GREEN BAY

Record: 5-2

Last week: Green Bay 24, Houston 22

Up next: at Jacksonville (2-5)

Quarterback: Jordan Love – 110 for 179 (61.5), 1,351 yards, 15 TD, 8 INT, 94.1 rating

Fun fact: Despite missing two games due to a knee injury, Love has completed 19 passes of 20-plus yards with five touchdowns and an average of 33.4 yards per completion on those throws. Love has a 113.4 passer rating on passes that travel at least 21 yards in the air, which is second highest behind only Goff (135.4) and tied with Cincinnati's Joe Burrow (113.4).

Twentyman: Kudos to Malik Willis for holding down the fort in Love's absence due to a knee injury early in the season. It shouldn't be understated how important that was for the Packers.

Love has some of the best collection of skill weapons in the league and is tied for the NFL lead with 15 touchdown passes, but his eight interceptions are also tied for the league lead. For him to take the next step and be considered in the top tier of quarterbacks, he's got to limit the mistakes.

CHICAGO

Record: 4-2

Last week: Bye

Up next: at Washington (5-2)

Quarterback: Caleb Williams – 130 for 199 (65.3), 1,317 yards, 9 TD, 5 INT, 88.7 rating

Fun fact: Williams is tied with Burrow with 13 passing plays of 25-plus yards on the season. That ranks fifth best in the NFL behind Goff (14), Darnold (15), Josh Allen (15) and Brock Purdy (19).

Twentyman: I've been really impressed with the way Williams has settled in the last couple weeks. It's hard to play quarterback in this league and the NFL has a way of chewing up and spitting out rookie quarterbacks at an unfair percentage. The Bears are doing a good job running the football and not asking Williams to do it all.

He has weapons at the receiver position and throws a terrific deep ball. He's shown a knack for eluding pressure and extending plays, and he's created some big plays because of it. He is taking too many sacks (20), but this NFL thing doesn't seem too big for him. That's huge for a rookie just six games into his career.
