TWENTYMAN: Week 3 observations

Top 10 defense: After three weeks of football, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn should get a lot of credit for the job he's done contributing to Detroit's 2-1 start. Detroit's allowed under 300 total net yards in two of their three games to start the season. The run defense is elite and the secondary is really starting to come into its own. They've got some injuries on that side of the ball they need to attend to, but it's not outlandish to think Glenn is putting together a Top 10 defense in Detroit.

Goff's playmaking: Jared Goff threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns and made a couple big plays with his arm and his legs late in the game to seal Detroit's 20-13 victory. He rifled a 3rd & 11 completion to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown for 17 yards with two minutes to play, and then ran for eight yards on a bootleg a couple plays later to clinch the victory. Those are cold-blooded plays at the end of the game.

Third-down D: Glenn had a great plan for Kyler Murray and a Cardinals' offense that was No. 1 in the NFL entering the game (58.3 percent) on third down. Arizona was just 1-for-9 (11.1 percent) in the game on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth down.

Bye week timing: The Lions weren't too excited about the bye coming Week 5 when the schedule was released in April. Teams usually prefer that to be around the middle of the season, but it just might work out in Detroit's favor this week as they are dealing with some key injuries to linebacker Derrick Barnes, defensive lineman Alim McNeill, safety Brian Branch, cornerback Terrion Arnold and tight end Sam LaPorta. Detroit gets an extra day to recover this week playing Seattle on Monday Night Football, and then a week off with the bye.

Undefeated stat: I have to give Lions media information manager Greg Maiola credit for this stat. David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs have each produced a touchdown in the same game six times. Detroit is 6-0 when they both score a touchdown in a game.

Turning some heads: I had defensive line coach and run game coordinator Terrell Williams on my podcast this week and one young player he talked about being excited for was rookie defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo, who played some extended snaps this week due to injuries upfront. Wingo finished with three tackles, including an impressive tackle 10 yards downfield on a screen pass. I talked to some of Detroit's guards this week about Wingo and they are very impressed by the rookie and his speed/strength combo. He's someone to keep an eye on as he continues to get opportunities.

Field optimization: Punter Jack Fox is such an important weapon for this team. Lions special teams coordinator Dave Fipp talked this week about the job Fox has done improving himself as a holder over the years, and he's certainly one of the best punters in the league. Fox punted five times Sunday for 247 yards (49.4 avg., 45.4 net), pinning four punts inside of the 20-yard line.

Lions fans: What a show out for Lions fans at State Farm Stadium in Arizona Sunday. There was a sea of blue in the crowd, especially behind the Lions' bench. There was an audible 'Jared Goff' chant at the coin toss and a 'Let's go Lions' toward the end of the game. There had to have been upwards of 15,000 Lions fans in that stadium. Lions fans are amazing. Give them a good football game and they will come.
