RECAP: Lions at Cardinals

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Detroit Lions haven't lost back-to-back games since October 2022 and they kept that streak alive Sunday with a 20-13 road victory in Arizona to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Detroit knew they had to do two things better this week than they did in last week's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 1. Convert in the red zone. Detroit was 2-for-2 after going 1-for-7 last week. 2. The defense had to do a good job limiting Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray making plays out of the pocket. They did a really nice job with that as Murray was limited to 207 passing yards and 45 rushing.

The Lions took an early 7-0 lead on a David Montgomery 1-yard touchdown run on Detroit's opening drive of the game that saw Montgomery run six times for 39 yards as Detroit established the run early and finished with 188 total rushing yards in the contest.

Arizona countered right back with an eight-play, 70-yard drive on their opening possession, capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Murray to wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to tie the game at 7-7.

In a back-and-forth contest early, Detroit took back the lead on their second possession, marching 70 yards in 13 plays and finishing with a Jared Goff 5-yard pass to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown for the score. Kicker Jake Bates missed the extra point, however, and the Lions led 13-7.

Detroit pushed the lead to 20-7 in the closing minutes of the first half on a terrific call from offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, dialing up a short pass from Goff to St. Brown completed at the Arizona 20-yard line. St. Brown lateraled it back to running back Jahmyr Gibbs who was crossing the field behind him for a 20-yard touchdown.

Lions safety Kerby Joseph made a huge interception in the Lions' end zone on the Cardinals' first drive of the second half. It was Joseph's second interception of the season and the 10th of his career, which ties for the fourth most a Lions player has logged through the first three seasons of their career.

Goff threw an interception to Cardinals linebacker Dennis Gardeck at the Lions' 36-yard line midway through the third quarter, but credit Detroit's defense for having his back. They forced a turnover on downs at the Lions' 23, tackling Murray short of the line to gain on a 4th & 1 play. Detroit took it down to the Arizona 34-yard line but also turned it over on downs, failing to convert their own 4th & 1.

The teams traded punts for a majority of the fourth quarter until a late Matt Prater field goal with three minutes left trimmed the lead to 20-13.

From there, Detroit was able to whittle the clock down to zero after a huge 17-yard completion to St. Brown on a 3rd & 11 play right before the two-minute warning. A Goff 8-yard run to pick up a first down and a couple kneel-downs ended it.

QB comparison: Goff had a perfect passer rating in the first half, completing all 12 of his passes with two touchdowns. He finished completing 18 of his 23 passes for 199 yards with those two touchdowns, one interception and a 113.4 rating.

Murray finished 21-of-34 passing for 207 yards with one touchdown, one interception and a 76.2 rating. He rushed for an additional 45 yards.

Big moment: It was actually a moment that didn't happen, thanks to a timely whistle by the officials.

With the clock winding down close to the two-minute warning, it looked like Goff snapped the ball right before the two-minute warning. The result of the play was pressure on Goff as he tried to throw the football and an interception by Cardinals linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. who returned it for a touchdown.

But the officials blew the play dead, and the Lions went on to score a touchdown on the drive.

Key stat: Arizona was just 1-for-9 on third down in the contest after entering the game leading the league with a 58.3 conversion percentage.

Player of the game: Give the game ball to Joseph, who not only had an interception, but also a key breakup on a 4th & 7 play in the fourth quarter that helped preserve the win. He had a nice tackle on Murray on a third-down scramble in the first half that forced a punt. He had three tackles, two passes defended and an interception in the contest.

Injury report: Linebacker Derrick Barnes, who hurt his knee in the second quarter absorbing a cut block, was carted to the locker room and did not return. Neither did defensive tackle Alim McNeill, who left late in the first half with a shoulder injury. He was originally listed as questionable to return but was downgraded to out early in the third quarter.

Defensive back Brian Branch left the game late in the fourth quarter after a helmet-to-helmet hit with Cardinals tight end Trey McBride, who also left the game on the play.
