2024 position breakdown: Quarterbacks

The good: Jared Goff is one of the finalists for the NFL MVP award. That's how good a season the ninth-year quarterback had for the Lions in 2024.

Goff was second in the NFL in passing yards (4,629), second in completion percentage (72.4), second in passer rating (111.8) and fourth in touchdown passes (37) among all quarterbacks this season.

He tied Minnesota's Sam Darnold for the most 20-plus-yard completions (62) and led the NFL with eight completions of 50-plus yards. Goff produced six touchdown passes of 50-plus yards this season, tying Bobby Layne (1950) for the most in a season in franchise history.

Goff knows this offense and it's not expected to change much with new offensive coordinator John Morton, who was on staff in Detroit in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant in Ben Johnson's first year as offensive coordinator. Morton very much had an influence on the early development of this offense.

Goff is building such a terrific rapport with his skill weapons and Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery and Sam LaPorta are all under contract next season.

One area where Goff particularly excelled was on third down. Detroit's offense converted on third down 47.6 percent of the time, which ranked fourth best, and Goff had a 128.9 rating on third down with 13 touchdowns and no interceptions.

The bad: There were a couple games this season where turnovers were an issue at quarterback. They overcame one such instance in Houston, but unfortunately weren't able to in the most important game of the season.

The Lions were able to get a 26-23 win Week 10 over the Texans in Houston despite Goff throwing five interceptions in that contest. The defense and special teams were able to pick him up and Detroit got a terrific road win.

That wasn't the case in the 45-31 loss to Washington in the Divisional Round that ended Detroit's season in the playoffs after Goff lost a fumble in Commanders' territory and threw three interceptions, including a pick-six and two in Washington's red zone. Goff's 57.5 completion percentage vs. the Commanders was his second lowest all season, just ahead of a 50.0 mark against Houston.

Goff's 12 interceptions in the regular season were tied for the fourth most in the NFL.

Key stat: Goff now owns the record for the most games in a season completing at least 75 percent of passes as he did it nine times in 2024. He broke Tom Brady's record of eight such performances in the 2007 season.

Free agents: Teddy Bridgewater

Bridgewater, 32, retired after the 2023 season in which he served as Goff's backup and a key mentor to then-rookie Hendon Hooker. He coached his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, to a Florida state championship in the fall and then re-joined the Lions in December for their stretch run. He was Goff's backup in the playoff game vs. Washington with Hooker serving as the inactive emergency third quarterback.

Draft: Goff signed a four-year extension in May of 2024 that will run through the conclusion of the 2028 season. Goff is the quarterback in Detroit for the present and foreseeable future.

Do the Lions believe Hooker is on an upward trend in his development and do they plan to have him back up Goff through the duration of the two years left on his contract? General manager Brad Holmes and Campbell know the answer to that question, and it will determine if the Lions plan to add a veteran or rookie to compete in that room along with veteran Jake Fromm, who signed a Reserve/Future deal with the team following the season.

Anytime Hooker's development has come up with Campbell during his weekly media availability, he's always had good things to say.

"Doesn't mean we're disappointed in Hooker," Campbell said after the team signed Bridgewater. "That's not what this means. It just means this gives us somebody that's played a lot in the NFL, we're getting ready for the playoffs. And so, it'll be good to get him back in the fold with us."

Quotable: "I will ride with Jared Goff until the day I die," veteran All-Pro center Frank Ragnow said of his quarterback after the loss to the Commanders. "Any aspect of life, football, no matter what it is, one of the most standup human beings, player, leader, you name it. I'll always have his back."
