The Detroit Lions have named Denver Broncos pass game coordinator John Morton as their new offensive coordinator.
Here are five things to know about Detroit's new leader on offense:
1. FAMILIAR FACE
Morton, 55, is a Michigan native who played wide receiver for Avondale High School in Auburn Hills and collegiately at Western Michigan University.
Morton was the wide receivers coach in New Orleans on Sean Payton's staff when Lions head coach Dan Campbell was the assistant head coach/tight ends coach in 2016. The Saints were No. 1 in the NFL in total offense (426.0) and No. 2 in points per game (29.3) that season.
Morton was on Campbell's staff in Detroit in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant in Ben Johnson's first year as offensive coordinator. Detroit was No. 4 in total offense (380.0) and No. 5 in scoring that season.
Campbell called Morton 'a superstar' after he left Detroit to join Denver's staff after his one season in Detroit.
2. RELATIONSHIP WITH GOFF
Campbell said he wanted to hire a replacement for Johnson who would keep much of the Lions' current system and terminology in place in an effort to keep quarterback Jared Goff on an upward trajectory.
Goff set career highs with a 72.4 percent completion percentage, 37 touchdown passes and was second in passing yards (4,629). He was named a finalist for NFL MVP along with Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow and Saquon Barkley.
I expect the offense to look similar to what Goff has run the last three seasons under Johnson in terms of formations, pre-snap motions and terminology.
"The system was kind of built from the ground up, and it was to help him and for him to be a part of," Campbell said of the offense under Goff. "And so, yeah, that's huge, he'll have a lot of input. What he says is going to have a – says a lot to me. Now, is it going to be the ultimate decision? No, it's not, but what he says is going to mean a lot to me."
3. RESUME OF RESULTS
As the pass game coordinator for the Broncos the last two seasons, Morton led the team to a top 10 finish (sixth; 96.7) in passer rating in 2023 and was instrumental in helping rookie quarterback Bo Nix have a terrific first season this year to lead the Broncos to a Wild Card bid in the AFC. Nix completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 3,775 yards with 29 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 93.3 passer rating in his first season.
Morton started his coaching career working up the coaching ranks for the Raiders from 1998 to 2004 going from offensive assistant to tight ends coach.
He then was Jim Harbaugh's passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at the University of San Diego in 2005 as the team went 11-1 and averaged 42.6 points per game.
In 2006, Morton took a job on Payton's staff in New Orleans. It was Drew Brees' first season with the Saints and they went from 3-13 to 10-6 and were No. 1 in total offense and No. 3 in scoring.
Morton coached at USC the next four years, two as pass game coordinator and two as offensive coordinator, and the team averaged at least 30 points in three of those four seasons, including 37.5 per game in 2008.
The next six seasons, Morton coached wide receivers in the NFL in stops with San Francisco and New Orleans. He was the Jets' offensive coordinator in 2017 when quarterback Josh McCown had his finest NFL season that year in New York with career highs in yardage and touchdowns.
Morton was a senior offensive assistant with the Raiders from 2019-2021 before spending his one season in Detroit in 2022 and the last two in Denver.

4. A LOT TO WORK WITH IN DETROIT
In Detroit, Morton will inherit an offense that set franchise records for yards (6,962), points (564) and touchdowns (70) in 2024 and has finished top five in scoring the past three years.
They were the first team in NFL history to have two running backs (Jahmyr Gibbs & David Montgomery) and two wide receivers (Amon-Ra St. Brown & Jameson Williams) all produce at least 1,000 scrimmage yards in a single season.
Detroit has one of the best offensive lines in football with four of their five starters under contract in 2025. They also have a top five tight end in Sam LaPorta.
Morton will have plenty of ammunition to hit the ground running.
5. WILL MORTON CALL PLAYS?
Morton called plays with the Jets in 2017. Campbell has called plays for the Lions before, the second half of the 2021 season after relieving then-offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn of his duties.
We should know more about roles & responsibilities when we talk to Campbell again later this offseason.
