MISSION STATEMENT

Mission Statement

The GameAbove Sports™ Bowl was created to annually host a premier college football bowl game in Detroit, Michigan, to provide a first class experience to the participating conferences, participating institutions, student-athletes and fans, to promote the City of Detroit and contribute to the economic revival of Southeast Michigan, and to support community and youth groups that have adopted athletic and leadership development programs dedicated to football in the City of Detroit.

Becoming the GameAbove Sports™ Bowl

Ford Field has been home to many college football bowl games, and the Silverdome before that. After hosting college bowl games for nearly three decades at their home stadium, the Detroit Lions wanted to take part in the tradition by bringing their own bowl game to Ford Field.

The Lions' wish was granted when Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany had expressed a desire to revamp the conference's lineup of bowl games for the 2014 season to keep them "fresh." With the approval and support of both the Big Ten Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) football committees, the Lions created their own bowl game.

The Big Ten Conference, who first partnered with The Detroit Lions on the game in 2013 extends their agreement through 2025. The Mid-American Conference (MAC) replaced the ACC as primary bowl partner after previously being the game's secondary partner.

At the end of the college football season, officials from both conferences meet with bowl officials to determine the best possible matchup and choose their team representatives.

While the two participating teams and travel parties are in Detroit, the Bowl treats them to the best that Detroit has to offer. Festivities have included a welcome dinner at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation™; a trip to the Fowling Warehouse; ice skating at Campus Martius; helping feed the hungry at Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan; exploring, Michigan Science Center, and The Parade Company; shopping at the Somerset Collection; touring the city of Detroit, and so much more!
