TWENTYMAN: 5 areas to improve coming out of the bye week

The Detroit Lions head to their bye week with a 3-1 record, having played some pretty good complementary football heading into the break.

The bye week gives Lions coaches an opportunity to self-scout over the first month of the season and correct some areas that need adjustments.

Here's a look at five areas where the Lions can stand to play a little bit better football coming out of the bye:

1. Number: 35

What it means: Number of penalties called on the Lions through four games

Twentyman: A season-high 12 penalties were accepted by Seattle on Monday night totaling 101 penalty yards. Opponents have accepted 31 of those penalties totaling 307 yards. Only Baltimore (357), Miami (336), Houston (326) and Denver (309) have given up more penalty yards on the season. Detroit's defense has been responsible for 20 of those accepted penalties.

2. Number: 11

What it means: Opposing passing plays of 20-plus yards

Twentyman: This is an area where the Lions really struggled last season, finishing last in the NFL allowing 69 passes of 20-plus yards. The 11 they've allowed through the first month of the season currently ranks 19th. The 1,033 passing yards allowed by the Lions on the year are the third most in the NFL.

3. Number: 8.7

What it means: Average yards per punt return

Twentyman: When you're a team that is 3-1 and coming off an impressive win, there's a little bit of nitpicking that goes with an article like this. Kalif Raymond has been one of the best punt returners in the NFL since arriving in Detroit, but that average currently ranks 21st in the NFL. Detroit's 26.8-yard kickoff return average is 12th best so far.

4. Number: 95

What it means: Number of first downs given up by Detroit's defense

Twentyman: This number is a little skewed by the 38 Seattle picked up Monday, which was just two away from the NFL record for a single contest. Still, 95 is the most in the NFL through four weeks and 56 of those have come via the pass, which is second most behind only Minnesota (60). Detroit's given up 16 via penalty, which is the most in the league so far.

5. Number: 21

What it means: Negative plays generated by Detroit's offense

Twentyman: This is a little surprising given how effective Detroit's been rushing the football and protecting the quarterback. Those 21 negative plays, which ranks 16th in the NFL, have generated 89 negative yards with 13 of the negatives coming via the run.
