RECAP: Lions vs. Seahawks

In each of the last two seasons the Lions lost high-scoring affairs – 37-31 and 48-45 – to the Seattle Seahawks at Ford Field. We saw another track meet between these two clubs again on Monday night at Ford Field, but it was the Lions who found a way to come out on top of this one, 42-29.

Detroit's offense finally came to life in a big way.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff was perfect on the night (18-for-18), David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs combined to rush for three touchdowns, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams had touchdown catches and even Goff caught a touchdown as the Lions' offense exploded for nearly 400 yards and 42 points.

After both teams traded punts on their first possessions, Detroit started their second drive on their own 7-yard line. No problem. Goff orchestrated a 12-play, 93-yard drive that included seven Montgomery runs for 39 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead. It's the fourth straight game Montgomery has rushed for a touchdown.

Detroit's third possession started with a lot better field possession thanks to Detroit's defense. Linebacker Jack Campbell knocked the ball loose from Seattle wide receiver DK Metcalf at the Detroit 34-yard line. It was recovered by cornerback Carlton Davis III and returned to the Seattle 14-yard line. The offense needed only three plays from there to take a 14-0 lead on a 3-yard Gibbs touchdown run.

Seattle cut it to 14-7 early in the second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Kenneth Walker III. Detroit responded right back on their next possession, going 70 yards in nine plays capped off by Gibbs' second touchdown run of the contest, this one from 1-yard out to take a 21-7 lead.

Seattle took their opening possession of the second half 10 plays and 75 yards and trimmed Detroit's lead once again to a touchdown with a 9-yard AJ Barner touchdown grab from quarterback Geno Smith.

Detroit answered by going 70 yards in just five plays, set up by a spectacular 40-yard catch and run by Montgomery. They scored on a terrific call from Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson - a reverse to St. Brown, who threw a 7-yard pass to Goff. It was the first passing touchdown for St. Brown and receiving score for Goff in their careers.

Seattle came right back and scored on a Walker 1-yard touchdown run but went for two points and didn't get it to make the score 28-20. Detroit answered one play later on a Goff to Williams 70-yard touchdown grab to make it 35-20. All of Williams' five career touchdown catches have been from 30-plus yards.

Seattle responded back with a seven-play, 70-yard scoring drive culminating with Walker's third touchdown of the game, this one from 21 yards out to make it 35-27 to begin the fourth quarter.

Both defenses finally made back-to-back stops on the next two possessions of the game before Detroit was able to push the lead to 42-27 on an 8-yard touchdown catch from Goff to St. Brown with just over five minutes left in the game.

Detroit's defense forced a turnover on downs at the their own 3-yard line with just over two minutes left, but the offense took a safety two plays later to make it 42-29. Safety Kerby Joseph finally ended it for the Lions with his third interception of the season in the end zone with under a minute to play.

The win puts Detroit's record at 3-1 on the year as they head into their bye week.
