RECAP: Lions vs. Buccaneers

After losing to the Lions twice last season, once at home Week 6 and another in the Divisional Round of the playoffs at Ford Field that ended their season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers exacted a bit of revenge Sunday by downing Detroit, 20-16, at Ford Field.

Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield continued his terrific start to the season with a passing touchdown and one rushing. He made multiple plays with his legs to escape pressure and extend plays.

Detroit's offense was never really able to get on track for the second straight week. Detroit settled for too many field goals and were just 1-for-7 in the red zone, which was the big story of the game for Detroit in a close loss. The Lions were a top three offense in the red zone last year, but credit the Bucs for winning that battle Sunday.

Trailing 20-16 with 5 minutes, 12 seconds on the clock and starting at their own 18-yard line, quarterback Jared Goff drove the Lions down to the Bucs' 10-yard line with a little more than a minute left but couldn't convert on 4th & 8 as the Lions turned it over.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, Detroit got the ball back at the Bucs' 44-yard line with 33 seconds left. Detroit got as far as the Bucs' 28-yard line before turning it over on downs again without a shot to the end zone as they fell to 1-1 on the season.

After trading a couple field goals apiece through the first quarter and early into the second quarter, Tampa Bay took a 13-6 lead with just over nine minutes left in the first half on a 41-yard touchdown strike down the left sideline from Mayfield to wide receiver Chris Godwin. Mayfield kept the drive alive a couple times on third down before scrambling out of the pocket and finding receivers in space.

The Bucs were driving late in the first half when Lions second-year safety Brian Branch made a leaping interception at the Lions' 44-yard line. It should have led to some points for Detroit late in the half after the offense marched to the Tampa Bay 9-yard line. After an 8-yard completion to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to the 9-yard line on 2nd & 10 and the clock winding down under 10 seconds, the offense went to spike the football but the field goal team started running on the field. Detroit was flagged for too many men on the field, which came with a 10-second runoff to end the half. That ended up being a huge mistake.

After a Jake Bates 32-yard field goal to begin the second half trimmed the lead to 13-9, the Lions took their first lead of the game late in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by David Montgomery that capped a 12-play, 68-yard drive.

Tampa Bay came right back on their next drive needing only six plays to go 70 yards and take the lead back for good with a Mayfield 11-yard run.

QB Comparison: Goff finished the game 34-of-55 passing for 307 yards with no touchdowns, two interceptions and a 61.7 passer rating. It was his most inconsistent game in some time.

Mayfield completed 12 of his 19 passes with a touchdown, interception and 90.9 passer rating. He also rushed five times for 34 yards and a touchdown.

Big moment: Trailing 20-16 with 5 minutes, 12 seconds on the clock and starting at their own 18-yard line, Goff drove the Lions down to the 10-yard line but the Lions turned it over on downs on 4th & 8 with just a minute remaining.

Players of game:

Offense: After catching just three passes for 13 yards last week against the Rams, St. Brown was back in a big way this week catching 10 passes for 110 yards, including a few key third downs to keep drives alive.

Defense: Aidan Hutchinson was brilliant in a losing effort for Detroit. He recorded a career-high 4.5 sacks that resulted in a loss of 37 yards for the Bucs. Hutchinson now has 5.5 sacks on the season.

Key stat: The Lions were just 1-for-7 converting in the red zone Sunday with three field goals and a turnover on downs. Detroit is now 3-for-11 (27 percent) in the red zone to start the season.

They were No. 3 in the league in that category last year, converting those trips into touchdowns 64.1 percent of the time.

Injury report: Linebacker and defensive captain Alex Anzalone left the game in the second half to be evaluated for a concussion. He did not return.

Rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold left the game briefly in the first half with a finger injury but he returned to the game and finished the contest.

Next week: at Arizona, 4:25 p.m.
