CHICAGO – The Detroit Lions talked all week about there being a bad taste in their mouth after suffering their first defeat in over three months last week to Buffalo.
The Lions were on a mission to get back on track this week and did so in commanding fashion, 34-17, against division foe Chicago Sunday afternoon.
Detroit's offense was rolling all game. The only time they didn't score on their first seven possessions of the game was a 65-yard missed field goal by Jake Bates as the first half expired. Jack Fox's first punt for the Lions was with under six minutes left in the game.
Quarterback Jared Goff was terrific throwing for 336 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers as the Lions' offense set a new franchise record with 493 points on the season, improving to 13-2 to stay atop the NFC North and NFC playoff standings.
The Lions opened the scoring with a 30-yard Bates field goal on their first possession of the game after the defense forced a 3 & out on Chicago's first drive. Lions defensive end Josh Paschal jumped on a Rome Odunze fumble at the Bears' 36-yard line to give the ball right back to Detroit's offense with terrific field possession.
It took Goff and Co. seven plays from there to punch it into the end zone on a 1-yard Jahmyr Gibbs touchdown to give Detroit a 10-0 first-quarter lead.
Odunze fumbled again on Chicago's next possession as linebacker Mitchell Agude knocked it out of his hands and linebacker Jack Campbell jumped on it at the Detroit 40-yard line. The Lions turned it into a 34-yard Bates field goal.
Detroit made it 20-0 early in the second quarter on an 82-yard scoring strike from Goff to wide receiver Jameson Williams, who got behind the Bears' defense. Goff hit him perfectly in stride. It was Williams' fourth reception of 50-plus yards this season, joining Calvin Johnson (2011) and Cloyce Box (1950) as the only players in franchise history to do that.
Chicago notched their first points of the contest and trimmed the Lions' lead to 20-7 on a 1-yard Caleb Williams pass to tight end Cole Kmet that capped a 14-play, 70-yard Bears drive midway through the second quarter.
Detroit's offense responded by driving the ball 70 yards on 11 plays and pushed the lead back up to 20 points with an 8-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown with less than a minute remaining in the first half.
Chicago got a late 45-yard Keenan Allen touchdown with just 19 seconds left in the second quarter to make it 27-14 at the half.
Detroit opened the second-half scoring with Goff's third touchdown pass of the contest, this one 21 yards to tight end Sam LaPorta to push the lead to 34-14. It was Goff's 33rd passing touchdown of the season, a new single-season career record for him.
Chicago added a field goal midway through the third quarter to make it 34-17.
Williams led the Lions in receiving with five catches for 143 yards and a touchdown. Gibbs ran 23 times for 109 yards with a touchdown and added four receptions for 45 yards.
QB comparison: Goff finished the game 23-of-32 passing for 336 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 137.0 passer rating. He has produced 41 career 300-yard passing games, tying Dan Marino and Matt Ryan for the second most 300-yard games through nine seasons in the NFL.
Caleb Williams completed 26 of his 40 passes for 334 yards with a couple touchdowns, no interceptions and a 107.7 rating. He also led the Bears in rushing with six carries for 34 yards as the Lions held Chicago to just 59 rushing yards in the contest.
Big moment: Detroit had a 20-point lead with less than one minute remaining in the first half but allowed the Bears to score on a 45-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left in the half to trim the lead to 27-14.
Detroit received the second-half kickoff and marched 79 yards in six plays capped off by a 21-yard Goff to LaPorta touchdown on what looked like a fake stumble by both Goff and Gibbs that froze the defense and allowed LaPorta to get wide open.
It pushed the lead back up to 20 and Chicago could never recover.
