Tim Patrick has made a lot of big catches for the Lions this season and has really solidified Detroit's receiving corps with his size, length and toughness. The one thing he hadn't yet done this year was score a touchdown. Well, he can check that one off the list too, because he got two of them Thursday night in Detroit's 34-31 win over the Green Bay Packers.
Patrick finished with six catches for 43 yards with touchdown grabs of three yards and one yard. It's the first time Patrick has scored a touchdown since 2021 and it's the second multi-touchdown game of his career.
"Huge. What a great addition he's been," Lions head coach Dan Campbell said of Patrick after the game. "He just continues to make plays for us in the run game and the pass game, stepped up big here.
"We talk about catching and knifing today. Catch, turn, and run. Catch it, tug it, turn, and run. Do whatever – if you can only get five, you've got to get a six. If you can only get a seven, you've got to get us eight, and man, I mean he did that multiple times, and then comes up with the two big touchdowns for us. He's been an unbelievable addition, what a stud."
At 6-foot-5 with a large catch radius and terrific hands, he's become a reliable target that quarterback Jared Goff trusts implicitly.
"Yeah, today seemed like his day down there – certainly in the red zone," Goff said. "He's been so consistent since he got here as far as unselfish, blocks, does everything right and he hasn't gotten a touchdown.
"What week are we in – 14, 15, whatever it is – hasn't gotten a touchdown until today and had two of them. He deserves it man, he's a stud and I'm so happy he's on our team."
BATES WALK-OFF
First-year kicker Jake Bates knocked his third game-winning field goal through the uprights Thursday night as time expired. It's his fourth game-winning or game-tying field goal made with under two minutes left in regulation this season.
He made both of his field goal attempts, the game winner was from 35 yards, and all four extra points.
Bates has only missed one field goal all season and now has 111 points scored through 13 career games.
MCNEILL INJURY
The Lions can't afford any more serious injuries on defense but will have to wait and see this week about the severity of the head injury defensive lineman Alim McNeill suffered Thursday. He was originally evaluated for a concussion after just the fourth defensive play of the game. He was cleared and briefly returned before leaving again. At halftime he was ruled out for the rest of the game with a head injury.
The one positive for the Lions is they have a mini bye of sorts playing on Thursday and have 10 days before their next game against the Buffalo Bills.
