INDIANAPOLIS – Winning on the road in the NFL is no easy task, but the Detroit Lions have made it look that way the last two seasons, especially this year.
Sunday's 24-6 win in Indianapolis against the Colts makes the Lions a perfect 6-0 on the road this season with wins in Arizona, Dallas, Green Bay, Minnesota, Houston and now Indy.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said he had a flashback recently of the 2022 season and at one point the team was 0-11-1 on the road in his tenure.
"Just thinking about that and now I think we're 16-5 since then," Campbell said. "Just that group of guys. I said something in the locker room about it. (Jared) Goff and Frank (Ragnow) and (Taylor Decker) Deck and (Penei) Sewell and Alim (McNeill) and Saint (Amon-Ra St. Brown). It's like, 'Man, you remember that?'
"But all of those guys are responsible for the flip. Everybody that's in that locker room is responsible for it."
It says a lot about a team if they can consistently win on the road. Mostly, it says you have a pretty darn good team that plays complementary football.
"I think first and foremost we prepare for it," Decker said. "We prepare for loud environments. We have a bunch of guys that are competitors that are not going to bat an eye, and they want to go into the lion's den.
"They want to go into the arena because it's fun. It's fun to go out there into hostile environments when you're a competitor. I feel like we have a locker room full of guys that are just competitive, and they want that challenge."
Detroit gets a little home cooking for three straight games against Chicago, Green Bay and Buffalo before hitting the road two more times Weeks 16 and 17 in Chicago and San Francisco before finishing the regular season at Ford Field against the Vikings.
"We come together on the road," Goff said. "We are road warriors. It's an us against them mentality."

THIRD-AND-LONG
Third-and-long is often a throwing down in the NFL, but the Lions are bucking that trend. They have become one of the better teams in the league at picking up 3rd & 6 or longer running the football, which they did again twice Sunday with Jahmyr Gibbs picking up a 3rd & 8 and David Montgomery picking up a 3rd & 6. Gibbs' second touchdown run came on a 3rd & 5 play.
"It's one of those things that's a mentality," Campbell said. "It's kind of one of the things we do here."
Running the ball in those situations is a curveball for the defense and now that Detroit's offense has shown they are willing and able to do it, defenses have to prepare and adjust for it.
"I think that's a testament to Ben (Johnson) trusting those guys up front and me and Jah (Gibbs) to get the job done," Montgomery said. "Jah had one that I think was a 3rd & 9 that he converted. I think I had one that was 3rd & 6 that I converted. We take pride in that also. Whenever we get a chance to run on third down, our mentality is that we better get the first (down)."
SHORT WEEK
It's Thanksgiving in Detroit and that means it's a short week to get ready for Thursday's game at Ford Field against the Chicago Bears.
The Lions have some new injuries they are dealing with from the Colts game, though Campbell seemed optimistic about a few of them. Montgomery (shoulder), Decker (knee, ankle), cornerback Carlton Davis III (knee) and wide receiver Kalif Raymond (foot) left the game.
Decker and Montgomery said afterward they could have returned and should be good to go Thursday. Davis was standing on his leg talking to reporters and said it felt pretty good, but imaging would determine more. Campbell seemed more concerned about Raymond's injury after the game.
"I don't know Chicago's deal yet. I don't know what they're dealing with, but I'm sure they've got injuries," Campbell said. "Everybody's got them, and the league doesn't care. They make the schedule, and we play this and we roll, you know?
"Seven days later we got Green Bay. So be it, man and that's the way it rolls, and we'll be ready. We'll have our unit ready to go Thursday back home, Thanksgiving, division opponent, and we'll be locked in and ready to roll."
Detroit hasn't won on Thanksgiving since 2016, and that's a streak they are looking to end Thursday.
"We haven't won on Thanksgiving in a while and that's something we want to change," Goff said.
