East Rutherford, New Jersey – It has been nearly two years since Hendon Hooker last played in a football game after tearing his ACL while in college at Tennessee on Nov. 19, 2022.
The Lions' second-year quarterback spent his rookie season last year rehabbing the injury and was Detroit's emergency third quarterback late in the season, but he never saw the field.
He was excited for the Lions' first preseason game, but his night lasted just a quarter in the second half after suffering a concussion on his second possession.
"Obviously, he's in the protocol," head coach Dan Campbell said of Hooker after the game. "He'll be evaluated. I don't know how long it's going to be. He got his bell rung. Obviously, we would have loved to get more time with him, but that's one of those things that happens. I think on one of his runs there."
Hooker led an impressive 14-play, 65-yard drive late in the third quarter in which he had runs of 16 yards and six yards, lowering his shoulder and absorbing a good hit on both runs.
The drive eventually ended at the three-yard-line with an incomplete pass on fourth down, but it was a good drive for Hooker, who was 5-for-9 passing for 36 yards and had 34 yards rushing on four carries in two series of work before leaving the game.
"That's what happens when you run. In this league, at the quarterback position, you are going to take some hits," Campbell said. "So, you have to be real selective. He's going to have to learn to be selective. He's going to need to slide if he is going to use more of his legs. It's good, it gets you out of trouble, but that's the downside of it, you expose yourself to hits."
Unfortunately Hooker's concussion wasn't the only injury suffered Thursday night.
Defensive lineman David Bada suffered an Achilles injury and offensive lineman Connor Galvin suffered a knee injury. Campbell said both are significant injuries that will be long-term.
Wide receiver Antoine Green also suffered a concussion, linebacker James Houston a bone bruise in his knee, cornerback Morice Norris a hamstring injury and defensive lineman Nate Lynn left with a shoulder injury. Campbell doesn't think these injuries would be long-term.
HIGHER COMFORT LEVEL
When the Lions selected Brodric Martin in the third round of last year's NFL Draft out of Western Kentucky, they knew the defensive lineman was going to be a bit of a developmental project.
That was certainly the case, as he played in just three games as a rookie and had three tackles.
Heading into Year 2, there are bigger expectations on Martin. He's been getting significant reps over the first three weeks of training camp with fellow defensive tackle DJ Reader still rehabbing an injury.
Martin has looked better, improving his technique, hands and particularly his pad level. It was good to see him record his first sack Thursday to go along with four tackles and two passes defended.
"I feel way more comfortable playing out there," Martin said after the game. "I was watching the tape from last year my first game against New York (in the preseason) and just looking at it man, knowing how I just played out there, I definitely upgraded myself."
At 6-foot-5, 330 pounds, Martin has the potential be a disruptor in the middle for the Lions as part of the interior defensive line rotation if he continues to develop the way the Lions hope. Thursday's performance should give him a lot of confidence.

SHOUT OUTS
Campbell usually likes to wait to until he can break down the film before heaping praise on individuals for their performance, but asked after the game if there were any players that stood out just from first glance, Campbell didn't hesitate.
"Yeah, (receiver) Isaiah (Williams) really showed up," Campbell said. "He made some plays out there and that was clear. He did some really good things that showed up.
"Defensively, we're going to know a lot more when we watch the tape, but I did think (defensive lineman Mekhi) Wingo did some things. You can fit him a little bit in there. I thought (linebacker) Malik (Jefferson) made some plays. Long guy for the position. (Safety) C.J. Moore went in there and made some plays. I thought (cornerback) Ennis (Rakestraw Jr.) had a good showing too, at corner early in the game."
Williams led the team with four catches for 35 yards in rainy, wet conditions. Wingo nearly had a sack and had a couple other nice rushes that set up plays for teammates. Jefferson was tied for the team-lead with four tackles and also had a tackle for loss. Moore had three tackles and Rakestraw had a couple nice tackles, including a third-down tackle that ended an early Giants drive.
Campbell also mentioned punter Jack Fox, kicker Jake Bates and rookie running back Sione Vaki as players who impressed him.
