NOTEBOOK: Goff continues to deliver with impressive day in Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS – Jared Goff is playing the quarterback position so well right now you'd be hard pressed to find anyone else doing it better in the NFL over the last month.

Goff completed 22 of his 25 passes in Detroit's 31-29 win over Minnesota Sunday with 280 yards, two touchdowns, no turnovers and a passer rating of 140.0. Goff had a passer rating of at least 150.0 the last two weeks in wins over Dallas and Seattle.

He's now posted a passer rating of 140.0-plus in three straight games, becoming just the fourth player in history to do so, joining Aaron Rodgers (2011), Kurt Warner (1999) and Roger Staubach (1971).

"He's a stud," Lions head coach Dan Campbell said after the game of his veteran quarterback. "The guy has arm talent, no question. But it's what he's got here and what he has here (pointing to head and heart) and that's what makes him a dangerous player. It's what makes him really one of these who you can build around."

It's been one heck of a stretch for Goff over the last month. He's completed over 80 percent of his passes with a rating above 140.0 with nine touchdowns and no interceptions over Detroit's last four games, all wins over Arizona, Seattle, Dallas and now Minnesota. He tied the franchise single-game completion percentage record Sunday (88 percent) for a player with at least 25 attempts.

What stands out about Goff's performance Sunday was how disciplined he was. He took the underneath stuff and fed his running backs until opportunities came to hit the ball over the linebackers and into the intermediate and deep parts of the field. That's been Goff's game for the better part of a month now and it's why the Lions have the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL. They've produced 30-plus points in three straight games for just fourth time in franchise history, also doing so in 1997, 1971 and 1952.

"I thought we had a great plan and executed it well," Goff said after the game.

The reality is that any plan offensive coordinator Ben Johnson comes up with is bound to work when the quarterback is as on-target and seeing the field as well as Goff is right now.

"He's a winner, man," Campbell said of Goff. "He'll find a way to win. He'll find a way to put the offense in position to win the game. He doesn't get frazzled. He's tough. He's competitive. He's just reliable. I love the guy, man."

MISSING HUTCHINSON

Detroit's edge rushers were playing their first game without NFL sack and pressure leader Aidan Hutchinson. Did the Lions get enough consistent pressure from their edges against the Vikings?

"I need to watch the tape to really digest that," Campbell said. "There were a couple times things felt a little long, like, 'Man, we're covering for a bit.' But I can't say that caught my eye. We need to watch the tape. I know we battled in there."

Detroit recorded four sacks and five quarterback hits on Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold, but only one of those came from an edge rusher (Josh Paschal) while three others came from linebackers (Jack Campbell, Malcolm Rodriguez and Trevor Nowaske).

"I was looking back at my text messages and (Hutch) was texting me during the game at 2:21," linebacker Alex Anzalone said. "So, I know he's watching. It's hard losing him, but at the same time we have to keep going and keep going for him, too. Guys stepped up collectively and we have to keep it going."

ST. BROWN 100-YARD GAME

Veteran wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was big in the passing game for the Lions, catching all eight of his targets for 112 yards and a 35-yard touchdown right down the seam in the second quarter.

St. Brown has produced 100-plus receiving yards and a touchdown in three straight games against Minnesota dating back to last season.
