FIRST DOWN: BATES MACHT ES WIEDER
Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell arbeitet regelmäßig an verschiedenen Spielsituationen im Training. Zufälligerweise übte er am Donnerstag eine End-of-Game Szene, die sich am Sonntagabend beim 26:23-Comeback-Sieg der Lions in Houston ähnlich abspielte.
Im Training brachte ein Pass von Jared Goff auf Amon-Ra St. Brown die Lions an die 43-Yard-Linie. Daraufhin verwandelte Kicker Bates ein 60-Yard-Field-Goal im Freien gegen den Wind.
Am Sonntag folgte das echte Szenario: Ein Pass von Goff auf St. Brown brachte die Lions in der Schlussminute auf die 37-Yard-Linie der Texans. Die Offense machte noch drei Yards bis zur 34-Yard-Linie und ließ die Uhr auf vier Sekunden herunterlaufen. Bates trat für ein 52-Yard-Field-Goal an – und traf. Seine Teamkollegen stürmten jubelnd auf ihn zu und trugen ihn auf den Schultern vom Feld.
Mit dem Sieg verlängerten die Lions ihre Siegesserie auf sieben Spiele und behaupten mit einer Bilanz von 8-1 die Spitze der NFC.
"Ich bin noch nie so hochgehoben worden," sagte Bates lächelnd in der Kabine nach dem Spiel. "Es war großartig, zu sehen, wie alle von der Sideline auf mich zugestürmt sind. Das war ein cooler Moment."
Bates' Geschichte ist unglaublich: Vor 18 Monaten hat er noch Steine verkauft, jetzt ist er zweimaliger Matchwinner der Lions. Er hat in dieser Saison alle seine Field-Goal-Versuche verwandelt und steht nun bei einer makellosen 14-von-14-Bilanz.
"Ich verdien das alles nicht," sagte Bates. "Ich war früher ein Fußballspieler und habe NFL-Spieler immer bewundert. Jetzt selbst hier zu stehen, ist wie ein Traum."
Zudem stellte Bates einen persönlichen Rekord auf, als er kurz vor Ende des vierten Quarters ein 58-Yard-Field-Goal zum Ausgleich schoss.
"Das war das Erste, woran ich gedacht habe, als ich ihn angeschaut habe ... und ich hatte einfach ein gutes Gefühl dabei," sagte Campbell über das Training vom Donnerstag, bevor er Bates am Sonntagabend auf das Feld schickte. "Ich hatte einfach das Gefühl, dass er es schaffen wird – und genau das hat er getan. Er ist rausgegangen und hat es perfekt getroffen."
SECOND DOWN: DEFENSE LEISTUNG
Vier Punts. Zwei Interceptions. Ein verschossenes Field Goal.
So verlief die zweite Halbzeit für die Houston Texans, die zur Pause noch mit 23:7 in Führung lagen.
"In der Halbzeit kam Aaron Glenn (Defensive Coordinator) zu uns und hielt eine emotionale Ansprache," berichtete Cornerback Carlton Davis III, der beide Interceptions in der zweiten Halbzeit für die Lions holte. "Er sagte uns, wir sollen einfach unser Spiel spielen und alles auf dem Platz lassen."
Die Lions-Defense folgte diesem Aufruf und zeigte eine beeindruckende Leistung, vor allem nach der Halbzeitpause. Ihre starke Defensive ist ein zentraler Grund, warum Detroit zum ersten Mal seit 1954 eine Saison mit einer Bilanz von 8-1 begonnen hat.
Die Defense hielt die Texans bei nur 6 von 15 erfolgreichen Third Downs, erlaubte lediglich 56 Rushing Yards bei 28 Versuchen (2,0 Yards im Schnitt), erzielte vier Sacks und forcierte zwei entscheidende Interceptions.
"Ohne diese Defense hätten wir das Spiel nicht gewonnen," sagte Campbell. "Offensiv haben wir das Nötige getan, um am Ende Punkte zu erzielen, aber ohne die fünf Turnover der Defense wäre es unglaublich schwer gewesen."
Trotz der fünf Ballverluste der Offense stand die Defense in schwierigen Situationen standhaft. Am Ende machte sie die entscheidenden Plays, um den Sieg zu sichern.
THIRD DOWN: DURCHHALTEVERMÖGEN
Die Statistik zeigt fünf Interceptions für Jared Goff, aber das spiegelt nicht die ganze Wahrheit wider.
Eine der Interceptions war ein Hail-Mary-Versuch zum Ende der ersten Halbzeit. Zwei weitere kamen zustande, als Goff beim Wurf getroffen wurde. Eine resultierte aus einem Missverständnis mit Jameson Williams über die Laufroute, und bei der letzten drehte sich Tight End Sam LaPorta zu spät um.
"Ich hatte nicht das Gefühl, schlecht zu spielen," sagte Goff nach dem Spiel mit fünf Interceptions. "Ich habe das Spiel gut gelesen, aber es gab abgefälschte Pässe, gute Plays von der Defense und einige unglückliche Situationen. Ich habe trotzdem nie das Vertrauen in mich verloren, weil ich das Gefühl hatte, die richtigen Entscheidungen zu treffen."
Goff warf auch zwei Touchdowns und spielte in den entscheidenden Momenten stark. Damit brachte er die Lions in eine Position, um das Comeback zu schaffen.
Er beendete das Spiel mit 15 von 30 Pässen für 240 Yards, zwei Touchdowns und fünf Interceptions. Doch das Wichtigste: Er führte die Lions zu einem 10-Punkte-Comeback im vierten Viertel – seinem zehnten vierten Quarter Comeback und seinem elften Game-Winning-Drive mit dem Team.

FOURTH DOWN: SIEGESSERIE

"Das sagt viel über uns als Team aus," sagte Davis über die aktuelle Siegesserie. "Wir gewinnen auswärts gegen starke Gegner, die meiner Meinung nach zu den Besten der Liga gehören. Das gibt uns einen riesigen Schub für unser Selbstvertrauen."
Detroit spielt nun vier der nächsten fünf Spiele im heimischen Ford Field, darunter die nächsten drei gegen Teams mit einer Bilanz unter 0.500 – Jacksonville, Indianapolis und Chicago.
