TWENTYMAN: Week 17 observations

Lucky No. 7: Tight end Sam LaPorta is the fifth Lions player with at least seven touchdowns this season which is their most players reaching that many in a season in franchise history, per ESPN Stats & Information.

Extra beef: What's better than bringing in 6-foot-9, 330-pound Dan Skipper as an extra blocker and eligible receiver along the edge offensive line? How about adding 6-foot-3, 322-pound rookie guard Christian Mahogany, who is quickly earning a reputation at the Meijer Performance Center as a nasty, physical blocker in the run game.

Both Skipper and Mahogany checked into the game a couple times together as eligible receivers for run plays. They were fun to watch. If the Lions continue to use them both, you have to think offensive coordinator Ben Johnson will have a wrinkle moving forward.

Superpowers: Safety Kerby Joseph's two interceptions Monday give him nine total on the season. He said after the game that taking the ball away is his superpower. It certainly has been, but that's not all Joseph has been good for in Detroit's defense. He really is a complete player. His 12 pass breakups are also a career best and his 77 tackles are five shy of his career high in that category.

No punts: Poor Jack Fox and Pat O'Donnell. The Lions and 49ers punters were asked to take the night off in a Lions' win that featured zero punts from either team. Detroit's possession chart looked like this: TD, TD, turnover on downs, kneeldown (half), TD, FG, TD, FG, TD, kneeldown (end game). San Francisco countered with: TD, TD, TD, missed FG, TD, INT, missed FG, INT, TD.

No injuries: The biggest thing Monday was getting out of Santa Clara with no injuries on a short week before hosting Minnesota for the NFC North title and NFC's No. 1 seed Sunday night. Penei Sewell suffered a thumb injury in the first half, but he played through it and head coach Dan Campbell didn't seem too worried after the game. That was it along with the normal bumps and bruises.

Cause for concern?: Joseph corralled two big interceptions for Detroit's defense that helped the Lions pull away to beat the 49ers Monday night, but the Lions' defense struggled slowing down the 49ers' offense most of the evening, particularly in the passing game. Brock Purdy threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns as the 49ers put up 475 yards of offense and scored 34 points.

There were too many open 49ers pass catchers for my liking with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson and a talented Vikings passing offense coming to town next weekend. There are certainly things to correct defensively for Detroit this week.

Goff block: Quarterback Jared Goff will throw his body in the way of a defender here and there to help a teammate with the ball. What he did Sunday on a run play where running back Jahmyr Gibbs ran left and cut back all the way across the field right wouldn't really be considered a block but more of a speed bump maneuver in front of 310-pound defensive lineman Maliek Collins to help Gibbs pick up positive yards. Teammates love when quarterbacks do that stuff in the run game.

Good company: Amon-Ra St. Brown caught a 4-yard touchdown on 4th & goal in the third quarter that was the 33rd touchdown of his career. The list for most career receiving touchdowns in a player's first four years in a Lions uniform now has two names at the top:

  • 1t. St. Brown (33)
  • 1t. Calvin Johnson (33)

St. Brown has one more chance Sunday vs. the Vikings to take the top spot alone.

Primetime: Detroit improved to 10-2 in primetime games under Campbell.

Big leg: First-year kicker Jake Bates converted two field goals Monday, including a 57 yarder. Bates now has 135 points on the season, passing Jason Hanson (134 points in 2012) for the most points scored in a season in franchise history. He also has made three field goals of 55-or-longer this season.
