Bettors support Rams early, Lions late at BetMGM

To kick off their 2024 season, the Lions welcome the Rams for a rematch of the Wild Card round on Sunday Night Football.

Over the summer, the consensus amongst bettors at the BetMGM online sportsbook is a Lions win, but a cover from Los Angeles (+3.5).

On July 10, Detroit sat on 79% of bets placed and 92% of dollars wagered for their moneyline. Those percentages saw their moneyline price increase from -165 at market open to -185.

However, bets and dollars were simultaneously on the Rams to cover the spread. In the Wild Card round, Detroit won outright with Los Angeles covering as underdogs.

From the market open through July 10, Los Angeles attracted 51% of bets and 68% of dollars to cover the spread.

From July 11 through August 14, support strengthened for the Rams, both against the spread and on the moneyline.

Tickets remain lopsided in favor of Detroit, but to a smaller degree. As of August 14, 71% of tickets and 88% of the moneyline handle hit the Lions.

While the Rams didn't see an increase of tickets to cover the spread, money more strongly favored the visitors.

Head coach Sean McVay's team jumped from 68% of spread dollars on July 10 to 72% of spread dollars on August 14.

But support from bettors has flipped in the most recent period.

As of Tuesday, Sept. 3, the Lions have received 66% of bets and 56% of money wagered to cover the spread.

Dan Campbell's team has simultaneously maintained popularity on the moneyline. To date, they've attracted 71% of bets and 76% of the money to win outright.

One consistent throughout: There's an expectation points will flow on Sunday night.

Initial betting — market open through July 10 — saw 65% of dollars hitting the over despite receiving only 44% of bets.

Including the period from July 11 through August 14, over 51 points has now attracted 48% of bets and 58% of dollars wagered.

Although more tickets have hit the under recently — under 51 points has attracted 58% of wagers — money is still on over 51 points. As of Sept. 3, that side has garnered 57% of all dollars wagered at BetMGM.
