The Detroit Lions just completed the greatest regular season in franchise history, winning 15 games and earning their second consecutive NFC North title and the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC playoffs.
There's a lot of reasons for Detroit's success this season but here are five numbers that really highlight just how good this team has been all season.
1. Number: 1,929 & 1,001
What it means: Total scrimmage yards for Jahmyr Gibbs and total receiving yards for Jameson Williams
Twentyman: This was a historic offense for the Lions this season, setting franchise records for total net yards (6,962), points (564), touchdowns (70) and point differential (plus-222). The reason the Lions were able to take the next step offensively in 2024 was because of the emergence of Gibbs and Williams as consistent threats within the offense. The speed and playmaking ability they both bring to the table every week, along with the consistent production of players like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta and David Montgomery, made this offense one of the scariest units to face in all the league.
2. Number: 32.4 percent
What it means: Opponent third-down conversion percentage against the Lions' defense
Twentyman: It's a defense's job to limit points and get off the field. No defense did a better job this season at getting off the field on third down than the Lions. The 32.4 conversion percentage on third down by Lions' opponents was the lowest in the NFL this season ahead of Pittsburgh (35.3), Philadelphia (35.5) and Minnesota (35.6). Detroit's defense was No. 2 in the NFL in fourth-down percentage (41.4). When they needed it most, they consistently got off the field and gave the ball back to an explosive offense.
3. Number: 111.8
What it means: Quarterback Jared Goff's final regular-season passer rating
Twentyman: It's impossible to win at the clip the Lions did this year without getting MVP-caliber quarterback play. That's what the nine-year veteran Goff provided. His passer rating was second behind only Baltimore's Lamar Jackson (119.6). Goff completed 72.4 percent of his passes (fourth highest in NFL history) and threw 37 touchdowns vs. 12 interceptions. He completed 75 percent of his passes in nine games this season, breaking Tom Brady's previous record of eight such performances in a season.
4. Number: 98.4
What it means: The average rushing yards allowed by the Lions' defense this season
Twentyman: It's tough to be a good defense in this league if you can't stop the run. The Lions were one of only seven teams this season to allow on average less than 100 yards rushing per game. The other six were Baltimore (80.1), Minnesota (93.4), Denver (96.4), Tampa Bay (97.8) Pittsburgh (98.7) and Green Bay (99.4). What do those teams have in common? They are all playoff teams.
Detroit allowed less than 100 yards rushing in 11 games this season and finished as the seventh best scoring defense in the league.

5. Number: 46.2
What it means: Punter Jack Fox set a new NFL record in net punting average
Twentyman: I certainly wasn't going to forget about the role special teams has had in Detroit's success this year. Fox became the first punter in NFL history to average at least 51.0 gross punting yards with a net of 46.0 (46.2).
Fox doesn't reach those marks without 10 other players on the field with him doing their jobs too. Opponents averaged just 6.4 yards per punt return (third best) this season with a long of 17 yards.
On the flip side, Detroit ranked second in kickoff return average (31.4) and third in punt return average (12.9). Being able to flip the field and create big plays on special teams was a hallmark of this 2024 Lions football team.
