2024 position breakdown: Running backs

The good: Detroit topped 2,000 rushing yards and 25 rushing touchdowns this season as Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery became the best one-two punch in any backfield across the NFL.

The Lions rushed for at least 100 yards and a touchdown in 15 games during the regular season and Detroit running backs combined to produce 478 rushes for 2,362 yards (4.9 avg.) and 28 touchdowns on the year. Detroit's 32 scrimmage touchdowns between Gibbs and Montgomery led all NFL backfields.

Gibbs has developed into one of the best running backs in the NFL in just his second season. His 20 touchdowns led the NFL this year and he was fifth in rushing yards (1,412) and third in rushing average (5.65). He had 41 rushes of 10-plus yards, which ranked third behind only Saquon Barkley (46) and Derrick Henry (45).

Montgomery's hard-nosed running style is a perfect complement to Gibbs' big-play ability. Montgomery rushed for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns in 14 games and added 341 receiving yards to give him over 1,000 scrimmage yards on the season. He had some of Detroit's most memorable runs of the season, including a catch-and-run vs. Seattle Week 4 that earned him Kyle Brandt's 'Angry Runs' award that week.

Rookie running back Sione Vaki wasn't a big part of the offense with Gibbs and Montgomery handling most of the running duties, but he proved to be one of the team's most consistent special teams players as their leading tackler on teams.

Gibbs, Montgomery and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown became the first trio in NFL history to all total at least 1,000 scrimmage yards and 10 scrimmage touchdowns in consecutive seasons.

Name Games Att. Yards TD Rec. Yards Rec. TD
Jahmyr Gibbs 17 250 1,412 16 517 4
David Montgomery 14 185 775 12 341 0
Craig Reynolds 17 31 139 0 40 0
Sione Vaki 16 6 14 0 37 0
Jermar Jefferson 2 6 22 0 10 0

The bad: Only Miami (74), Houston (52), New Orleans (48) and Philadelphia (48) had more negative runs than the Lions' 46 this season. That's an area running backs coach and assistant head coach Scottie Montgomery will want to clean up a bit next season.

Detroit also had only one run of 50-plus yards this season, tied for the second fewest in the league. Philadelphia had six and Baltimore four.

Key stat(s): Gibbs became the second running back in franchise history to top 1,900 scrimmage yards and 16 scrimmage touchdowns in a season, joining Billy Sims in 1980.

Detroit averaged 4.91 yards per carry this season when running to the right side of the offensive line. They averaged 4.64 yards running left and 4.39 yards running up the middle.

Free agents: Craig Reynolds (restricted), Jermar Jefferson

The minimum restricted tender at running back is projected to be $3.185 million for one season and it's hard to see the Lions using it on Reynolds with Gibbs and Montgomery back and Vaki providing depth. That certainly doesn't mean the two sides can't work out a new deal.

The fact that Jefferson didn't sign a futures contract with the Lions may mean the two sides are looking to explore other options.

Draft: The Lions took Vaki in the fourth round last season and they liked the development they saw in him playing running back for the first time for an entire season. He was mostly a safety in college at Utah but converted to running back full time in his first year in Detroit.

That's not to say Lions general manager Brad Holmes won't add to the positional depth at running back if their board falls that way later in the draft, but it's certainly not a position of need for the Lions heading into the offseason or the NFL Draft.

Quotable: "He's a dog. I mean it's evident enough. You know, Jah is special," Montgomery said of Gibbs when he got back from a knee injury in January that cost him the last three games of the regular season, forcing Gibbs to carry more of the load in the running game.

"He's a generational talent. I didn't expect anything less of him. So, Jah's going to roll and I'm just kind of, whatever he needs from me I'm going to make sure he has, but it's kind of his show."
