10 takeaways from Glenn, Johnson & Fipp

Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and special teams coordinator Dave Fipp spoke to the media Thursday as they do every week. Here are my 10 biggest takeaways from those media sessions:

1. Johnson told his players this week the team's 1-for-7 showing in the red zone was on him and he needs to have a better plan between the 20-yard lines moving forward. Of their six red-zone runs last week, only two were positive, which put them behind the sticks. It was a combination of scheme, play calling and a lack of execution.

2. Arizona enters Sunday's contest ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing at 177.4 yards per game. Glenn said one point of emphasis this week is being alert that Arizona will run the ball on throwing situations and is really good in those situations converting and making big plays on the ground.

3. Head coach Dan Campbell took the blame for last week's end-of-half mix-up with the field goal unit and too many men on the field penalty that cost them three points, but Fipp took equal fault talking about it Thursday because it was his unit. Fipp shared with his players this week a point of emphasis: Things aren't a big deal until they are big deal. All the work they do rushing teams on and getting on the same page in practice may seem trivial at times but it is a big deal.

4. Johnson thinks Arizona is a completely different defense than they were a year ago. He said watching them on tape teams were able to run the ball on them last year and he could see the line of scrimmage get displaced. This year it's different. The Cardinals added some players through free agency and Arizona is much stouter up front against the run (ranked No. 9 coming into Week 3).

"I think the game wrecker, if you will, that's Budda (Baker), he's all over the place and they do a great job within that scheme trying to free him up and allow his instincts to take over," Johnson said.

5. What stands out to Glenn when he watches the tape of Cardinals rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.? It's his ability to go up and high point the football on the 50-50 balls. At 6-foot-4, Harrison has terrific length and body control. Glenn also said the Cardinals are doing a good job teaching Harrison that a play is never over with Kyler Murray at quarterback. He never stops trying to make a play.

6. Teams around the league are converting 50-yard field goals at a historic percentage (89 percent), which is higher than teams are currently converting 40-yard attempts (77 percent). Fipp thinks it's a small sample size after two weeks and soon enough those percentages will flip.

7. Asked about the lack of production early on from tight end Sam LaPorta, Johnson said that's just kind of the price of doing business when an offense has so many weapons and just one football.

"Last week it was (Amon-Ra) St. Brown, this week it's LaPorta, next week it's going to be somebody else," Johnson said. "That's just the nature of the beast. That's what we've got right now. We've got a lot of weapons and it's hard to guarantee someone five to eight targets every single game, that's not how it works."

8. There's a chance we could see Detroit's top five defensive linemen – Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, Levi Onwuzurike, Alim McNeill and DJ Reader – play a game together for the first time this season. Glenn is No. 1 on the list of people looking forward to that.

"When we have all those guys together, I expect those guys to be top in the league at some point," he said.

9. This might be the best special teams unit the Lions play all season. Arizona has a lot of premium talent on teams. Fipp said they are just as aggressive as the Lions in terms of looking for opportunities to call fakes and make a big play. He said his players on special teams are looking forward to the challenge.

10. It was good to see linebacker and defensive captain Alex Anzalone back on the practice field for the open portion of practice Thursday after he missed Wednesday navigating through concussion protocol. It's yet to be determined if the Lions will have Anzalone on Sunday. If not, Glenn said he's got a ton of faith in Jack Campbell, Malcolm Rodriguez and Jalen Reeves-Maybin to fill the void.
